My Favorite Tracks
Below are three of my favorite songs by half•alive and why.
What's Wrong
- This upbeat and groovy song uses the classic half•alive style by blending creative sounds, poetic and mystic writing, and a relatable life lesson. "What's Wrong" highlights our human tendencies to avoid fixing what's broken in our lives, and resolving in a hopeful tone that "the time's always right to fix what's wrong." Overall, a very enjoyable listen that leaves the listener with a sense of motivation.
Conditions of a Punk
- This song serves as the opening track to the band's album bearing the same name. "Conditions of a Punk" is interesting in where it is placed in the album because it technically would take place at the end of the album chronologically. It highlights the themes and story that will take place throughout the record, telling us what love really is, and how the singer came to relearn what it is. I love the sound that this song has, its message, and especially the bridge into the last chorus.
Yosemite
- Being a part of the "Conditions of a Punk" album, this track deals with themes about love and relationship, whether between other people or with God. In this song, Taylor sings that it's "hard to say goodbye", commenting that he did not know that he could fall from such a high point in his life. Ultimately, Yosemite is about reminiscing on those "mountain-top" experiences in your life where you feel the most love you have ever felt, and having to deal with saying goodbye to them. Something I love about songs like this one is when the artist will name the song a word or phrase that only appears once in the song, making the overall theme hit harder and seem more significant. I also just absolutely love the melancholy, hopeful instrumental in this track.
